In antiquity, particular stones were thought to have magical properties, were carved with potent images, and were inscribed with incantations. This colloquium was held in conjunction with the annual Getty scholar research theme "The power and function of ancient images." It brought together several specialists on ancient magic to explore the diverse roles that carved gemstones played in the ancient world. It also featured close examination of some of the magical gems in the J. Paul Getty Museum's collection.
